Everyone loves a good movie. “Boyz n the Hood” and “Friday” are still popular in this generation even though they were made in the 1990s. I think it all depends on what you’re looking for; some have cute romances or realistic life lessons, while others will make you laugh and become inside jokes with your family. I grew up with 90s and horror movies, so trust me when I say they are fantastic.
The first movie: “Love and Basketball” is a 2000s romance and sports movie, now although this movie was made in the 2000s it still has a nostalgic 90s touch with how the two main characters mess with each other in the movie. Before you watch this movie, however, it is PG-13 keep it in mind. This streams Apple TV and Prime. To be completely honest it reminds me of that one song by Mint Condition, “Pretty Brown Eyes” or as this generation knows it, “Breakin’ My Heart”. The movie starts out with a group of boys that are playing basketball a girl asks to play but they don’t think girls know how to play basketball. This movie is recommended to basketball players or for someone who loves other romantic 90s movies like “Poetic Justice.” This movie specifically has a lot to it like cheating, hard breakups, and what could happen to anyone in sports games.
Second Movie: “Menace to Society” is a 1993 crime and thriller movie. It’s quite graphic, rated R, and not suitable for children. The movie is available for streaming on Prime Video or Apple TV. It revolves around a man living in the ‘projects’ and delves into the world of gangs and guns. One of the key life lessons portrayed in the movie is “Don’t wait until the last minute to make the right decision.” If you’re seeking something less intense, you could consider “Don’t Be a Menace to Society While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.” It’s more lighthearted and satirical.
Third Movie: “Bebe’s Kids” is a 1992 comedy and musical movie streaming on Prime, Apple, and YouTube TV. The movie is PG-13 so it’s safe for the littles. You know that one group of kids in your neighborhood are just bad for no reason, this movie is going to probably remind you of that because this movie has some bad little kids running around causing trouble everywhere they go, scaring the whole town with their actions. This movie is ironic and shows how some kids grow up but also that some bad kids have a reason for their behavior aka another life lesson movie I would recommend watching this with your younger or even older siblings and if you like Nickelodeon’s old show “Rugrats” or “CatDog”. The movie is about a man who is trying to get with a woman but he mentions that he should try to do something like “fun world” for her nice behaved son, the next time that he sees them both he meets three more kids who cause a scene at the fun world.
Fourth movie: “Juice” is a 1992 R-rated thriller and crime film, and it’s one of my personal favorites. It features weapons, but it focuses more on the characters’ lives and the struggles they face as friends living in the hood and trying to keep up with the latest trends. The story revolves around a group of kids from Harlem who usually have fun and harmless trouble, but they end up robbing a convenience store, which drastically changes their lives. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoyed “Euphoria” or “Menace to Society.” You can stream “Juice” on Hulu, Prime, and YouTube. The movie offers a valuable lesson that may be a bit challenging to uncover, but all and all “Yo, you got the juice now, man.”
